“Luck is believing you’re lucky.” ~ Tennessee Williams
After an exhilarating terrifying ride home in the rain—my first encounter with the oily, rain covered streets of Los Angeles—I took stock of how “lucky” I was to arrive in one piece.
Thing is, it wasn’t luck that got me home safe. It was the safety course, protective gear, and overly cautious riding. Serendipitously, I went through my unread emails—which stack up from time to time—and found Madi T’s response to Seeking Unnecessary Solutions.
She spoke of an interview where—once funded—she would be hired at a startup that promised to pay her more than anticipated and encouraged world travel (her dream):
I went home, exhausted, and fell to my knees, thanking the world for such an opportunity. “What insane luck!” I thought, followed by “If they can’t get funding, can I repeat that luck?”
Reading this email, even though it is about a completely different subject, made me realize how silly that is. Sure, there’s an element of luck in all success, but I was completely de-valuing the work I put in.
Dearest Madi, as Rob Dydrek says (often, and with overwhelming enthusiasm)…
Madi realized,
It was NOT luck. It was me working my ass off, implementing daily habits to further myself, and negotiating like a boss, and anyone could have done it if they too were putting in the work every day to get to the next level in their career. And so if these guys don’t get funded, it won’t be up to luck if I get another opportunity. It’s completely in my hands.
Asia G. and Steve D. had big wins inside of Ghost Influence today, but not due to random chance. It was a commitment to bettering themselves, attention to detail, and investment of their time that enabled them to drive meaningful traffic. Further, it laid the groundwork for them to be able to reduce the manufacturing process of their luck.
Have you ever wondered how some people seem to always be in the right place at the right time? It starts with hustle, but it becomes habit, and then you become the source.
What’s the luckiest thing that’s happened to you recently? Was it really luck?
